About the Book:

The Mark on the Wall by Virginia Woolf is a celebrated modernist short story first published in 1917 as Woolf's first published work of fiction. The story centers on an unnamed narrator sitting in a chair, contemplating a small, dark mark on the wall above the mantelpiece.

Rather than standing up to inspect the mark, the narrator allows their mind to wander through a stream-of-consciousness exploration. The mark triggers reflections on memory, perception, the passage of time, history, religion, and the arbitrary nature of social conventions. The narrative drifts fluidly between philosophical introspection and sensory observations until a sudden external moment reveals the true identity of the mark.

A quintessential example of stream-of-consciousness narrative technique, The Mark on the Wall showcases Woolf's mastery of capturing the movement of human thought. It remains an essential read for lovers of classic literature, modernist fiction, and psychological prose.
