The story follows Ustad Ramzi, an aging and once-famous wrestler whose life is devoted to the traditions of his akhara, and Gohar Jan, a celebrated courtesan whose kotha was once a gathering place for wealthy and influential people. Both have reached the twilight of their lives as the society and traditions they once knew begin to disappear.

Ramzi struggles with the decline of wrestling traditions and tensions with his younger brother Tamami, while Gohar Jan faces the changing world around her. Their lives become connected through a quiet and unusual bond as they confront loss, changing values, memory, and the passing of an old way of life.

The novel explores themes of love, honour, tradition, identity, history, and the inevitable changes brought by time and social upheaval. It was shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize
